There is a niche of people that live off their nomadic lifestyle. They live out of their backpack and go from one place to another in a heartbeat. There seems to be one common trait that defines these people, as Tim Ferriss of the 4-Hour Workweek fame observed – they are following an uncommon set of rules.
They live their life according to the rules they set for themselves. They are the square peg in the round hole.
From the vantage view of the uninitiated, they may seem to brandish an uncaring outward attitude; but there’s more truth in the opposite of that impression than we care to observe.
Their travels bring out the best in them. Their journey fashion them to be admirable citizens of the world.
New Rich
They are not the occasional tourists who travel for leisure. Tim Ferriss calls them the New Rich – “those who abandon the deferred-life plan and create luxury lifestyles in the present using the currency of time and mobility.”
Does this mean they don’t care about going after building wealth or getting rich? Most of these people run lucrative businesses. Money for them is only a means to justify an end – that end is endless travel to their heart’s content. Money is simply not an object to desire. They measure their wealth by how rich the experience their travel has endowed them.
Money is an important piece of their lifestyle, but they don’t let it drive their cause. They enjoy life at the cost of giving up likely chances of a secure life. Security is not part of their vocabulary. They chose to live life outside of the comfort zone where security is least relevant.
Privilege
Being able to satisfy their wanderlust and earn a living at the same time is a privilege that many of us can only daydream about. Such a lifestyle is not even possible decades ago when access to the internet wasn’t widely available.
Their peculiar style of living is an earmark of a luxurious life. But theirs is not a lifestyle lived on monetary abundance but on freedom made possible by time and mobility.
Connectivity
With the aid of technology, these people are capable of building their own location-independent businesses. They are success-driven, globe-trotting, thrill-seeking entrepreneurs.
They are running their businesses in the magnificent landscapes of South America, in the beautiful spots in Southeast Asia, and everywhere and anywhere their travel itch brings them. They are not constricted by their physical location.
Productivity
Their lifestyle is characterized by high level of productivity. They don’t just work to earn money but to acquire a mode that affords them the kind of life that they chose to live.
It is on that line of philosophy that they do their work with utmost dedication and precision. Deadlines motivate them. Getting things done fuels their appetite to do more – this is productivity on steroids.
Many of us aspire to live this kind of life. This is what we’ve been dreaming about wide-awake in our cubicles. We want the freedom that the advocates of this lifestyle pursue with fervor.
